John Quinn, key builder of Restonic mattress brand, dies at 77
Helped develop Indiana-based licensee
David Perry — Furniture Today, January 6, 2010
NEW ALBANY, Ind. — John Quinn, a key builder of the Restonic brand and its licensee here, Sleep Products, died Jan. 4. He was 77.
Quinn began his career with Restonic in 1958, when he and his grandfather Ralph Quinn Sr. and brother Ralph Quinn Jr. left Serta of Louisville to make and market Restonic Triple Cushion mattresses under the name of Restonic Sleep Products.
John Quinn was active in the Restonic organization over the years, serving on the board of directors as chairman and treasurer. He worked as a mentor to new Restonic licensees, an ambassador to international licensees, and as chairman of search committees when the group sought new leadership, the company said.
“John spent his life in the bedding industry,” said Ron Passaglia, Restonic’s president. “He made a great impact with his contributions to his family and to growing the business at Restonic. Everyone who knew him respected his work ethic and enjoyed the business and professional relationships they shared with him. John was well respected throughout the industry and will be missed by all.”
Quinn’s colleagues remembered him as a man of honesty, fairness and integrity, qualities that remain central at Sleep Products, Passaglia said.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; sons Lee, Bob and Tom, all of whom are involved in the business; a daughter, Ellen; eight grandchildren, two of whom, Chris and Chad, are involved in the business; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at Highland Funeral Home in Louisville, Ky.

David Perry — Furniture Today, January 8, 2010
PINETOPS, N.C. — Top 10 bedding producer Therapedic has entered the upholstered furniture category with a licensee here.
The company has entered into an agreement for Edgecombe Furniture to produce sofas, loveseats, chairs, sofa-sleepers and other upholstery products under the Therapedic label. Therapedic’s MemoryTouch memory foam and PureTouch latex foam mattresses, as well as a spring mattress, will be featured in the sofa-sleepers.
The U.S.-made line will be available for shipment throughout North America, said Gerry Borreggine, CEO of Therapedic.

Retails are expected to start at about $399 for a sofa-sleeper.
“This is a strong program and a natural extension to our mattress line,” Borreggine said. The upholstery line will be shown at the High Point Market in April.
Edgecombe Furniture is a division of Cotton Belt Inc., whose Sleep Worthy division operates as Therapedic Mid-Atlantic, producing mattresses for five Southeastern states.
“We are excited about the growth potential with Therapedic, and we plan to grow stronger as part of the Therapedic team,” said Bob Phillips, vice president of Edgecombe.

Tempur-Pedic expanding role with Ronald McDonald House Charities
Will provide mattresses to more than 160 U.S. houses by end of 2013
Furniture Today Staff — Furniture Today, January 11, 2010
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Foam mattress source Tempur-Pedic International is expanding its role with Ronald McDonald House Charities and will provide mattresses to the more than 160 U.S. houses by the end of 2013.
Last year, the company outfitted four of the houses, which offer lodging to the families of sick children who are staying in nearby hospitals.
This year, another 30 to 40 houses will receive Tempur-Pedic beds, meaning more than 32,000 families this year will be able to get the sleep they need to support their children, according to the company. By the end of 2013, the plan is for all participating U.S. houses to have Tempur-Pedic beds.
“We’re honored to have a meaningful role in the wonderful work that this charity does for families, not only here in Lexington where we first got involved, but now, all across the country,” said Mark Sarvary, CEO of Tempur-Pedic International. “Tempur-Pedic is dedicated to helping people get their best nights’ sleep every night, but we know this can be particularly challenging for parents and other caregivers. We’re so pleased to be a part of this valuable undertaking helping families stay together, rest together and support each other in their times of need.”
Tempur-Pedic enlisted the help of logistics and transportation provider C.H. Robinson Worldwide to help plan the most efficient distribution of the beds over the next four years. Once they learned about the initiative, C.H. Robinson offered to arrange transportation of the beds, and donate the associated cost.
“We are very excited to be using our logistics expertise and resources in an effort that will benefit so many communities,” Tim Manning, said vice president of C.H. Robinson Worldwide. “Most importantly, we are proud to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities and their mission to provide comfort to families when they need it most.”

ISPA Expo to offer entertainment
Trade show set for March 3-6 in Charlotte, N.C.
David Perry — Furniture Today, January 12, 2010
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Treats from the Carolinas, prestigious awards and an “extraordinary” speaker will highlight the International Sleep Products Assn.’s Expo, set for March 3-6 in Charlotte, N.C.
The event, held every other year, features exhibits by mattress suppliers from around the world and is the industry’s largest trade show.
But, show organizers noted, there is more to the Expo than the exhibition.
The upcoming Expo will feature another appearance by the mattress industry‘s homegrown band, the Insomniaczzz, which stole the show at the Expo two years ago with a high-energy performance. They will be featured during the Welcome Reception from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3.
The theme of the reception is “Carolinas … From the Mountains to the Coast.” The reception, sponsored by Atlanta Attachment Co., will offer a variety of Carolinas-themed foods and drinks.
The Industry Breakfast, set for 7:45 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Friday, March 5, features a performance by illusionist Craig Karges, a nationally recognized speaker and author known as the “extraordinist.” He has made more than 4,000 appearances on four continents and all 50 states, and has appeared on “Larry King Live,” CNBC, CNN and E! Entertainment Television. ISPA officials said Karges blends mystery, humor, psychology and intuition in his presentation.
The Industry Breakfast also will feature the presentation of ISPA’s two top awards, the Russell L. Abolt Exceptional Service Award and the Robert MacMorran Memorial Award.
The Abolt award, which honors the longtime ISPA leader, now retired, is the association’s highest individual honor, recognizing an industry leader for advancing the interests of the mattress industry.
The MacMorran award, given to individuals who have demonstrated meritorious service to the sleep products industry, honors the late general chairman of ISPA’s Suppliers Council.

ARCHDALE, N.C. — Aided by an uptick in its domestic business, bedding major Sealy recorded a profit in its fourth fiscal quarter on a 1.9% increase in sales.
The company said it had net income of $2.6 million or 2 cents per share for the quarter ended Nov. 29. That reversed a net loss of $41.4 million or 45 cents per share in the fourth quarter of the previous year – a period that included one-time charges of more than $27 million.

Gross margin for the quarter was 39.5%, some 3.3 percentage point higher than last year’s fourth quarter. Rogers said he was especially pleased that gross margin on the company’s domestic business was 41.5%, a jump of 3.7 percentage points.
For the fiscal year ended Nov. 29, sales totaled $1.29 billion, a decrease of 13.9% from the previous year’s $1.5 billion.
